Online mediation

Online family mediation across England and Wales

Resolve family disputes from home with a trained, accredited mediator, using secure video calls at a time that suits you.

How online family mediation works

Online family mediation follows the same structured process as meeting in person. Your mediator joins you by video call on Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp, and can hold joint sessions or speak with each of you separately, from the comfort of your own home.

It covers everything our in-person service does, including child arrangements, finances and property, and communication between parents. If you have not yet had your MIAM, this can take place online too.

Getting started online

Four simple steps, with no travel and no need to sit in the same room as your former partner.

Step one is a free initial phone consultation, so we can understand your situation and check whether you qualify for Legal Aid.

Step two is your MIAM, held by video call, where your mediator explains the process and checks mediation is right for you.

Step three brings you together online for joint sessions, or in separate virtual rooms if you prefer, so you can work through what matters most at your own pace.

Step four is a written summary of what you have agreed, sent to you by email, which can be turned into a legally binding consent order if needed.

Why families choose to mediate online

Online mediation removes the travel, time off work and extra childcare that can make meetings hard to fit around family life, and many people find it easier to talk openly from somewhere familiar.

Where things feel tense, your mediator can keep you in separate virtual rooms and move between you, so you never have to face each other directly. You stay in control of the outcome, and your children remain at the heart of every conversation.

How much does online mediation cost?

Our fees are the same whether you meet us online or in person. We may be able to offer you FREE mediation through Legal Aid or the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme. If you do not qualify, our transparent fees are listed below:

  • MIAM: £120 + VAT per person
  • Mediation Meeting: £120 + VAT per person per hour
  • Summary: £60
  • Open Financial Statement: £80 per person
  • Memorandum of Understanding: £80 per person
  • MIAM certificate (C100 or Form A): £50 + VAT per form

* all prices are excluding VAT

Online mediation FAQs

What do I need for online mediation?

A phone, tablet or computer with a camera, a reliable internet connection and a quiet, private space where you will not be overheard. We use familiar platforms such as Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp, and we will help you get set up before your first session.

Many families find online mediation works just as well. The process, the role of your mediator and the agreements you reach are the same. The only difference is that you join from home.

No. If you would prefer not to see each other, your mediator can hold separate sessions and pass proposals between you, often called shuttle mediation.

Our online service is available to anyone who lives in England and Wales. If you live near Plymouth, you are also welcome to meet us in person at our office.

Yes, the same funding options apply online. You may be eligible for free mediation through Legal Aid, and the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme may contribute up to £500 towards mediation about child arrangements, subject to eligibility. Call us free on 0800 669 6109 to check.

Yes. Mediation is confidential whether it takes place online or in person, subject to a small number of exceptions, such as concerns about the safety of a child, which your mediator will explain at your MIAM.

"I recently used First Steps Family Mediation and was incredibly impressed by their professionalism, efficiency, and care. The administration team made the entire process seamless, and communication was excellent from start to finish. I am particularly grateful for their ability to facilitate separate shuttle sessions, which ensured a completely safe, neutral, and comfortable environment throughout. I highly recommend their services to any parent navigating family mediation."

Never thought I'd undertake mediation. But I'm glad I chose First Steps. At a stressful time in life, they were professional, supportive, helpful, and very knowledgeable. I never felt talked down to or made to be the bad guy. Would very much recommend them for anyone facing those difficult conversations. A neutral space to talk openly, and freely.

The management are very concerned about the clients experience - had a situation, she found a solution when she really didn’t have to and she made good on what was said to me - let’s hope the rest of the experience is to the same level Thankyou for your professionalism

If only the whole divorce procedure was as simple as dealing with First Steps. Karen and Samantha at the Plymouth office were absolutely amazing, providing reassurance, empathy, professional advice and genuinely cared about me and the process I was going through. I would whole heartedly recommend First Steps if you have any mediation requirements and add my thanks to them for everything that has been done by them.
